A few Words
About Larry
Larry Sager has written and recorded with Donald Baldwin of The Temptations, Bill Champlin of Chicago and performed with Stewart Copeland of the Police.
He spent hours in the studio with renowned writer-producer David Foster, learning many tricks of the trade, noting mixing down at deafening volume did not make him a miscreant in the control room. One of his most beloved musical experiences: sitting with his guitarist cohort and buddy Terry Gleason along with John Lee Hooker watching rare Jimi Hendrix footage and videos from John Lee’s personal collection at his home in Northern CA.
At age five, Larry began taking piano lessons from a well-known Detroit music company for which he still remembers the “test” they administered to see whether or not he had the required musical acumen required to enter their music training program. Concluding seven years of classical piano lessons, Larry became interested in blues and rock ’n’ roll which led him to fusion music, Miles Davis and avant-garde jazz. Larry now returns to his passion and roots: rock ’n’ roll music. This collection of songs includes “Off My Rocker” which he originally penned sitting on his basement stairs when he was 14 years old – modified on this newly recorded version to reflect the current state of social pressures and monetary alternatives.
One of the most versatile voices in the industry.
Larry comes from an extended family (cousins, aunts and uncles) of accomplished musicians, writers and performers. His father was an amateur musician. His mother was a classically trained pianist and violinist. At age 12, Larry taught himself the guitar, and after two years added electric bass, in order to be able to perform and play with the three top guitar prodigies in his neighborhood just north of Detroit He performed and recording with various bands playing blues, rock, rhythm and blues, fusion and avant-garde jazz. Moving to California while not of age to drink, he played in coffee houses, bars and clubs, with an assortment of bands playing rock, funk, fusion, and even performed with a big band jazz ensemble that on occasion featured Federico Cervantes and Joe Henderson. He never drank and they never carded him.
While delving into different genres, at one point Larry wrote a country music parody and won a songwriting award for it. He was also awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award as a new author for writing his book “No Guns, No Knives, No Personal Checks” penned during his night shift driving a taxi in San Francisco while studying for his bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing. Among Larry’s other other musical explorations, he briefly took on the “John Lennon” role in a Beatles cover band. But alas, “Paul” had problems singing and playing in tune – so Larry had to excuse himself from the group. Enjoy Larry’s new music.
